In the summer time ...

What is your favorite summer time activity?

Did your family own a slip and slide when you were a child?

What is the one thing you love most about summer?

What is the one thing you like least about summer?

What song(s) always reminds you of summer?

And did you crack open your head on a rock when you dove head first onto the slip and slide because someone forgot to clear the rocks from the grass before laying down the slip and slide tarp? No? Maybe that just happened in my family. :)

Hmmm ... maybe my sister placed the rock there.

Favorite summer time activity - drinking beer by/in the pool.

We didn't own a slip and slide, but our neighbours did.

I love the women's fashions in the summer!

I hate the heat/sunburn in the summer.

"In the summertime" by Mungo Jerry (Ray Dorsey) - hehehehe.

Were you there?!

Favorite activity - feeling warm, followed by alfresco evening meals. I also like camping.

No slip and slide. My mother was sure we'd break our necks.

Thing I love most - days that last forever

Thing I like least - I'm of Celtic and Scandinavian descent. I don't like slathering on the sunscreen. However, I find sunburns are my least favorite aspect of summer, so slathering is a big part of my summertime activity.

song - Boys of Summer by Don Henley. Everything about it says hot August days in high school and trying to get tan enough (ha!) to not look like Casper the Friendly Ghost once school starts again.

Bonus answer - Three smells always make me think of summer. Coppertone suntan lotion, syringa/mock orange blossoms, cut grass. It could be the dead of winter, and any one of those smells will immediately make me feel warmer and more relaxed.

p.s. I posted chapter one from Hitchhiking in Heels on my myspace page for old times sake. If you feel like taking a trip down memory lane with Punky and her Jimmy Choos, go to my profile and click on My Webpage.

We now return to our regular programming.

Favorite summertime activity: Pool!! You couldn't get me out of the pool when I was a kid. Any puddle of water would do.

Slip-n-slide: We made our own redneck slip-n-slide. Any blue tarps left out were spread on the lawn. Old tires made a barrier at the end so we wouldnt end up in the gravel. Fun times!!!

Love Most: Being able to go barefoot and not have people think you are weird.

Least: Mosquitos!!! Not such a big problem in CA, but in VA and Fl. OMG!

Songs: Summertime and the livings easy.
and
Hot time summer in the city...

1. Going ouside without a coat.

2. No. I tried one once and discovered that bellyflopping on a thin layer of wet plastic on the hard ground HURTS!

3. Many, many hours of sunlight.

4. When it gets too hot and sticky. But that's a small price to pay when you live in a place that's bitterly cold six months of the year.

5. Anything by The Beach Boys.

Watering my garden, beer in one hand, hose in the other.

Of course we had a slip and slide, but only for one year.

All the pretty girls come back outside or the enjoyment of a cold beverage on a hot day

Too short, at least here in Seattle

Not really a song, but I love to have the baseball game on in the background. Baseball reminds me of summer

Favorite activity? Making homemade ice cream in the old grinder bucket thing with lots of ice and rock salt. Almost always plain vanilla or fresh peach. Mmmmm.

Slip and slide? No, but we lived in two different houses with backyard, in-ground pools from 2nd grade to 9th grade.

Love most? Despite the recent rain in DC, I have to say afternoon thunderstorms that arise all menacing in the distance, turing the sky dark purple, then release torrents of wind and rain and the smell of fresh rain on hot asphalt, followed by a peaceful sunset.

Like least? Humidity!!!

Summer songs? Kokomo. Almost anything by Buffett, but particularly Boat Drinks, Volcano, Son of A Sailor. Most songs by the Drifters, too.

Favorite summer time activity? Either lazing around reading a book or watching baseball.

Hey, that's my favorite non-summer activity too!

Slip & slide? No, we lived in the city.

Most love about summer? As a kid it was getting out of school and going to camp. Now, it's outdoor concerts I guess.

Least? The excessive heat and humidity. I like the warm weather a lot more than the cold of winter, but there are limits to my enjoyment.

Songs? Ah, my forte.

Summer in the City (Lovin' Spoonful)
School is Out (Gary U.S. Bonds)
Here Comes Summer (Jerry Keller)
Hot Fun in the Summertime (Sly & the Family Stone)
Anything by the Beach Boys, especially I Get Around
Sealed With a Kiss (Brian Hyland)
Theme From "A Summer Place" (Percy Faith)

Also, songs that may not be summer-related but that were summertime hits:

Love Will Keep Us Together
Don't Go Breaking My Heart
Where Did Our Love Go
Satisfaction
Light My Fire

I love the women's fashions in the summer!

Ah yes, Higgy, how could I forget this? There is a famous story by Irwin Shaw called "Girls in Their Summer Dresses".

Boo - we're seeing Buffett tonight!!!

Motorcycle riding.

We didn't have a slip and slide, but the neighbors did.

The sound of the crickets singing in the grass as the evening falls.

That it ends.

Wouldn't It Be Nice by the Beach Boys.

You know, once, long ago, when I was a young person (college freshman), I saw the Beach Boys play at the Puyallup Fairgrounds during whichever fair they have there Labor Day Weekend.

We were right in front of the stage. It rained. We wore trash bags over our clothes and danced like maniacs. It was So. Much. Fun.

Oh I forgot a few of my favorite things about summer:
Baseball, Slurpees, and chasing lightening bugs. Smore's at summer camp were fun too. Well I still have baseball and slurpees

Favorite: Definitely swimming. I'm a water rat. Also, baking in the sun. Too bad I don't do it anymore. Too scary.

I've never been on a slip n slide once. :( Then again, I never needed one. I grew up with a summer home on a lake and swam all day long.

Love most: Long days, lightning bugs ("fireflies" for the rest of you), Chilling on the porch with a strong cold drink.

Like least: Mosquitos. And sticky DC humidity.

Songs: Mungo Jerry, Steal My Sunshine, School's Out for Summer, all the ones Jeff listed. :)
