Question 40

1. What is the purpose of life? Why are we here?

2. Why - when given an entire parking lot of lovely shiny cars from which to choose - do birds always choose to poop on my car?

3. Tastes great or less filling?

The lyrics below deeply affected me when I first heard them years ago. Today they seem a bit dark, but I still can see why they affected me as they did.

"Doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you." - Neil Young - Old Man

"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a sun in somebody else's sky, but why can't it be, why can't it be mine" - Pearl Jam - Black

Do any of you recall lyrics that affected you upon first hearing and have stuck with you over the years?

1) hhhrRoberto says it's "to be happy" and that the world is perfect because it is imperfect.

1b) I say the purpose of life is to work. No, wait, that's your purpose as part of society. Well, whatever. I say "work" because Katharine Hepburn would agree.

2) They have to hover to admire, dahhling.

3) Tastes great! No contest!

Lyrics: "Why do birds suddenly appear...every are near?"

1. Eat, drink and be merry - which usually means procreation and survival of the species. Given that I think it's "light-out" at the end of the ride, enjoy it while you can.
2. Because they LOVE you.
3. Tastes great. If it doesn't, you don't even have to worry about it being less filling!

Lyrics - "Shady Lady" - by Cowboy Junkies - "the love of my life is a shady lady, bringing me up while tearing me down." I used to sing that over and over again after I broke up with the Evil One.

I also love the lyrics to "If I had $1,000,000" by BNL - just to show the idiocy that people have when they fall into money.

1. life has a purpose? and i hold out a slim hope that i am not here....

2. approach this scientifically, have you examined the other cars and seen if they've been splatted on? they haven't? then it must be alphabetical order!

3. i don't drink much (i.e i don't get to drink much) so i'll go with great taste.

1) To enjoy the ride, and help others to do likewise.
2) They don't always, it's just so damned noticable when they do. I solve the problem by never washing the car.
3) Neither are worth drinking. Either drink real beer or have a diet soda.
"I've seen fire, and I've seen rain,
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end..."
Definitely music to help move your journey from a broken heart to slashed wrists...

ooh.. it's Jamester and he's quoting James(ter) Taylor!

1. To make the world a better place. To give back and sometimes, just to give. There's a poster/email-type thing running round that says "If you're still breathing, you haven't fulfilled your destiny" or words to that effect - basically, if we're still here, we should be doing something. I'm doing something. I'm filling this post with blather, because I can.

2. What colour is your car? I'm sure birds are attracted to the car where their droppings are most obviously displayed. It's an abstract bird art competition. "Did you see the navy '95 Corolla?.. that's one of Jimmy's finest efforts! He got the windscreen AND splashback on the bonnet!"

3. I presume this is an advertising slogan of some sort. Tastes great every time. If you're not enjoying the taste and flavour of something, or you know it could be better, then what's the point?

Extra credit: REM's "Everybody Hurts". I won't post all the lyrics, but they're here for anyone who doesn't know the song.
It was released at a time when I was depressed and had stuff just piling up on me. It felt like every time I tried to stand, something would knock me down again. It was so great to hear this and feel "not so alone" in what I was going through.

1. The purpose of life is to live. Keep it simple

2. To teach you a lesson about appearances. Even with bird poop on it, it still is your lovely shiny car.

3. Jamester is right drink real beer, so tastes great as long as it refers to real beer.

When I was in fifth grade one of the girls in class got up and sang que sera sera. I think that covers it. Although Fire and Rain has always been a great party tune.

1) 42
1b) To be productive and forward (better) the human race

2) Better your car than mine. Oddly enough I haven't had much problem with the birds since moving to CA. I'm sure all the birds are much too snobbish to use my corolla they hold out for the Mercedes, Lexus and BMWs

3) Taste great!

4) Pearl Jam- Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town

I changed by not changing at all.
Small town predicts my fate.
Perhaps that's what no one wants to see.
I just want to scream, "Hello."
My god its been so long. Never dreamed you'd return.
But now here you are and here I am.
Hearts and thoughts they fade away.

That is part of the song anyhow. I had just left home for college when I heard this song. The small town part and things fading away I guess it all got to me.

ooh! Kaf. says my destiny is to stop breathing!

*holds breath, passes out*

Wise woman says... one day your breathing will stop on its own. Do not try to hurry it along. Unless, of course, you are stuck sitting in a chair at a government office waiting for an appointment you've been ordered to go to,that you know you don't need, only to go to the appointment and told that your going to the appointment was totally unnecesary. Then you need to put a plastic bag over your head, tie it securely at the neck and hold your breath till you pass out. Otherwise, NO.

1. Ah, at last a question I can answer:

Who am i?
Why am I here?
Forget the questions someone get me another beer

What’s the meaning of life?
What’s the meaning of it all?
You gotta learn to dance
Before you learn to crawl

2. Only because my car is parked somewhere else.

3. Tastes great, obviously.

If you hear the song we sing
You will understand.
You hold the key to love and fear
In your trembling hand.
Just one key unlocks them both
It's there at your command
C'mon people now
Smile on your brother
Ev'rybody get together
Try to love one another right now

1. The purpose of life is what you decide it should be. Laugh until you cry at least once a day. If you see someone that seems down, try to make them smile. If you see a great sunset, stop a second to enjoy it. Just before you get out of bed in the morning, stretch until your toes peek out from under the blankets.

We're here because we each have a task. It's up to each one of us to figure that out. Mine is to discover the incandesant light bulb. Luckily for me, someone got that already, so I have a free ride on this one.

2. They're just trying to get your attention, Punky. What you don't realize is that it's only the male birds doing that and that's one of their little known mating rituals.

3. Tastes Filling.

Difficult question. Music has always affected me intensely and emotionally. There's been many songs that have hit me when I've heard them at a high or low point in my life, but as for one that's stuck with me through the years, that would have to be "Grand Illusion" by Clapton.

It was just a, nothing but a grand illusion.
Heart was quicker than the eye.
Nothing but a grand illusion,
Legend in my own mind.

Lyrics are here.

wsbvraak - Excuse me.

1. A life of purpose is one that has left its world in better shape than when it entered.

2. It doesn't have anything to do with that bullseye I painted on it, does it?

3. I'm a sucker for delicious things.

bonus: I usually listen to the music more than the words of songs, but Deep Inside of You by Third Eye Blind stuck out because of things happening in my life at the time.

Also, I've mentioned this before, but I really like Battle of Someone by Blues Traveler.

1) I would so love to know. If anyone has the answer, I'll be your best friend for life.

2) Because they know you'll appreciate the effort that went into their hard work and careful aim.

3) Tastes great. Moved to this itty bitty town from the land of microbrews. Yay Portland, OR!!!

"Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?" (Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd)
One of the reasons I left a dead-end job in tv that was making me miserable to become an actor.

1. Life is a playground. A playground upon which we play, learn, experience and grow. My purpose in life is to be happy, to love and be loved.
1b. Because we still have things to learn and experience and there are people we have yet to meet and love and be loved by, and there is more to teach and learn before the journey ends and the next one begins.

2. Perhaps it is a sign of affection?

3. Tastes great.

"Somebody" by Depeche Mode was a favorite of mine in High School.

My high school yearbook quote was by Pink Floyd from "Breathe":

"For long you live and high you fly
And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
And all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be."

2. Karma. My, what you must have done in a previous life. Must have been pretty awful.

3. Tastes great.

Boo ... you know ... in Italy being pooped on is a good sign. Anyhoo, I think my karma is pretty darn good ... I mean, I befriended you, didn't I? That will earn me good karma points for at least 2 lifetimes. :)

2. Birds are little bastards. Seriously, ever been to a bird wedding?

3. Tastes like teen spirit.

Lots of JT stuff

" a note in a bottle with nothing to say" is a favorite.

"Well I gathered up my sorrows, and I sold them all for gold. Then I gathered up the gold and I threw it all away. It all went for a good time and a song...come on. The laughter was like music, it did float my soul along...for awhile."

Triumph: Fight the Good Fight

Although "find an answer in your heart" is the most gag-worthy BS I can think of right now. One's spirit/soul/insidespark reflects answers but cannot (without circular logic) be the source of an answer. OK. So I have long pondered thoughts on the matter. email me.

The days grow shorter and the nights are getting long
Feels like we're running out of time
Every day it seems much harder tellin' right from wrong
You got to read between the lines

Don't get discouraged, don't be afraid, we can
Make it through another day
Make it worth the price we pay

The Good Book says it's better to give than to receive
I do my best to do my part
Nothin' in my pockets I got nothin' up my sleeve
I keep my magic in my heart

Keep up your spirit, keep up your faith, baby
I am counting on you
You know what you've got to do

Fight the good fight every moment
Every minute every day
Fight the good fight every moment
It's your only way

All your life you've been waiting for your chance
Where you'll fit into the plan
But you're the master of your own destiny
So give and take the best that you can

You think a little more money will buy your soul some rest
You'd better think of something else instead
You're so afraid of being honest with yourself
You'd better take a look inside your head

Nothing is easy, nothing good is free
But I can tell you where to start
Take a look inside your heart
There's an answer in your heart
